It's 1913, and the story is still boy meets girl, but the question is: will boy lose girl before he even gets a chance to win her?
His name on her lips twisted something in his chest. He swallowed hard, then watched as she took a strip of cloth from her basket and wrapped it around the wound. He continued to watch her, mesmerized by her hands, her quick movements, her gentle touch …

Johnny Devine, Living Large (Print, that is)

I'm pleased to share the ENORMOUS news that
The Memoir of Johnny Devine is now available in Large Print!

It's a hefty 415 page hardcover edition and weighing in at a whopping 1.3 lbs, according to Amazon.

(Whose job is it to weigh books? So, what do you do? Uh, I'm a book weigher. But I'm really discreet about it. You don't want the bigger ones to feel self-conscious, so I try to be sensitive and avoid weighing the heavy ones right after the skinny ones...)

So you get a book you can finally see without straining your eyes, but it's heavy enough to pull a hamstring. (?)

Seriously, I love large print. Not only do these books make reading easier, but when I go to reserve a popular title through the library, the large print versions are often available when the regular ones have 187 holds. Win-win!

The Memoir of Johnny Devine (Large Print) is available at Amazon for a hefty price ($36.95), but my guess is those who typically buy large print are prepared for that. Hopefully you've won the lottery or inherited a fortune from book addict. (Oh wait... that's a good one...)

The Memoir of Johnny Devine, a Novel, is a dramatic story-within-a-story of a Hollywood bad boy reformed and a good girl in need of reform. Set in the 1950s, it’s a powerful tale of love, redemption, intrigue, and the miracle of grace. Recipient of RT Book Reviews rare 5-star Top Pick, Seal of Excellence, Best Inspirational Romance 2015, and OCW Cascade Award for Historical Fiction.

I was pleased to find that the Cincinnati Library website includes a feature called Why This Title Appeals to Readers. They took the time to scan the 99 Goodreads reviews and pull the most frequently or commonly used terms people use to describe the "feel" of the Johnny Devine. According to CL, this book appeals in Tone: Moving, Strong sense of place, and in Writing Style: Engaging. I'm delighted to know readers are able to take away some of the things authors work so hard to include in our stories.

I'm happy with the way this edition turned out. If you get a chance to read one of these, let me know how you liked the larger print. I almost expected to see a center section of film stills, autographed photos of Johnny, and his Hollywood Boulevard star.

February 8 Review: By The Book
"5-stars is what I give The Memoir of Johnny Devine! I suppose this book could be termed an historical romance, but it is definitely so much more. With glimpses into the life of old Hollywood, a 1950s setting full of the unease of the McCarthy investigations, a woman living with disappointment and betrayal and an unlikely messenger of hope, Camille Eide has written a thought-provoking and touching novel I can Highly Recommend.

Retired film star Johnny Devine is writing his memoir. Instead of a tell-all from the notorious playboy of Hollywood, John wants to impart a message of hope to his readers. Eliza Saunderson, disillusioned and alone is hired to help whip the manuscript into a coherent whole. The two form an unlikely partnership and perhaps a second chance at a new life…" (to read the rest [CLICK HERE])

RT Book Reviews Awards December 2015 SEAL OF EXCELLENCE to The Memoir of Johnny Devine

In addition to being a 2015 Reviewers’ Choice Award Nominee, The Memoir of Johnny Devine (Ashberry Lane, 2015) has been awarded the RT December Seal of Excellence — the RT Editors' Book Pick of the Month.

Each month, RT reviews hundreds of books in several romance genres, including inspirational, mainstream, erotica, paranormal, and more. The Memoir of Johnny Devine was selected by a board of editors representing many romance genres. If I’m not mistaken, Johnny Devine is the first inspirational title ever to earn this recognition.

“The RT Seal of Excellence is awarded to the one title each month that stands out from all the rest. The RT staff nominates contenders which the editors then read and discuss at length. Sometimes a book is propelled to the top of the list by an innovative twist on a familiar story, or a villain that leaves readers chilled to the bone. In other instances the setting or the author’s writing style has set the story apart. But every title that wins the RT Seal of Excellence is our pick for the best read of the month.” RT Book Reviews

What RT Editors are saying about The Memoir of Johnny Devine:
“I am having a difficult time finding the words to describe exactly how much I loved The Memoir of Johnny Devine. Religion, particularly as a person’s saving grace, is a deeply personal and highly subjective topic. However, Camille Eide introduces the plot point with such sensitivity and respect that it’s easy to identify with the characters. I cannot tell you how much I loved reading about an educated, unmarried woman making her own way in the 1950s. In a time where women were expected to stay home, marry and take care of the household, our heroine Eliza is committed to her career and correcting social injustice. Her intelligence, sensitivity and grace immediately endear her to her new boss, the famous Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Devine (whom I pictured as George Clooney...you’ll see what I mean when you read). The most intriguing (and also disturbing) thing about this story is that despite the 1950s setting, the need for gender and racial equality as well as the ongoing witch hunt that is the Red Scare are very relevant today, in 2015, and I applaud Eide for being part of the conversation. She has managed to intertwine a beautiful love story, the desire to build a personal relationship with God and the necessity for social change into one truly fantastic read.” —Kristin Wise

The 12 books awarded the Seal of Excellence in 2015 are the nominees for RT BOOK OF THE YEAR. Only these twelve are nominated out of thousands of books RT reviews each year. It is a tremendous privilege and honor to be included in this list. But even more, it is especially meaningful to see God and the story he inspired set apart and honored in such a way. I'm extremely pleased and grateful for this.

Johnny Devine Cover Reveal & Pre-Order Deal

I LOVE THIS COVER!!

KUDOS to Nicole at Miller Media Solutions and Ashberry Lane Publishing for this stunning book cover for my upcoming novel! I think it is the perfect blend of of Hollywood glamour, nostalgic mood, intrigue, and romance, don't you?

The Memoir of Johnny Devine is a “classic” love story set in 1953 at a time when post-war America seeks security in prosperity and conformity. Hollywood’s Golden Age is coming to an end, McCarthy's “Red Scare” reaches new heights of paranoia, and unrest over civil rights continues to grow. It’s a story for those who enjoy a character-driven, inspirational drama, a strong but chaste romance, and a touch of intrigue.

This novel was a blast to write and research. In fact, the idea for it came to me in a dream one night at a time when I was in the middle of writing another book. I was so moved by the dream that I set the other book aside and began plotting. Soon, Johnny "Devilishly" Devine was born. (He may possess a few attributes similar to Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Gregory Peck. Their best ones, of course. :) )

Love can’t rewrite the pages of one’s past,
but it can cover a multitude of sins
---one page at a time.

Rumor had it that Johnny could seduce anything in a skirt quicker than he could hail a cab. But now, the notorious womanizer claims he's born again. Trouble is, everyone knows who he is and what he's done, and they'll never forget---the tabloids have made sure of that.

1953: Eliza Saunderson is a young war widow appalled by societal injustice and inequality. She also resents the notion that modern women are expected to look fashionable, keep house, and play bridge. What if a woman has other aspirations, other skills, other dreams? And then there was the expectation of marriage. Her's hadn't turned out to be the fairy tale her sister promised. Instead, marriage had taught her a painful lesson: Love wasn't worth the constant work of earning and fear of losing it. If what she had could be called love.

Desperation forces Eliza to take a job writing the memoir of the ex-Hollywood heartthrob, Johnny Devine. But to her surprise, she finds herself falling for the humble, grace-filled man John has become. Meanwhile, her passionate articles on racial injustice land her on McCarthy’s hit list and she must clear her name while trying not to fall in love with a man whose scandalous past keeps him too busy to notice her.

...Or does it?

The Memoir of Johnny Devine is the dramatic story within a story of a bad boy reformed and a good girl in need of reform. It’s a powerful tale of love, redemption, intrigue, and the miracle of God’s deliberate grace.

Johnny releases in print and eBook in Decemberbut the eBook is now available for pre-order at a Special Price of 3.99 ($1 off) thru release day.

You CAN Be A Great Dad - Even If You Didn't Have One

“It’s easy to talk about being a great dad . . . but when the rubber meets the road it’s not always so easy . . . If we didn’t have those qualities modeled for us by a father, it makes it even more difficult. Interestingly enough though, the qualities that make a great dad are easily learned and mastered by all men. Most men want to be a better dad, even a great dad, but just don’t know how . . .” From 10 Things Great Dads Do: Strategies For RaisingGreat Kids - by Rick Johnson, releasing September 15, 2015

My review: Fatherhood can be challenging, but it can also be fun, rewarding, and fulfilling. 10 Things Great Dads Do is packed full of things that fathers (as well as moms and grandparents) can begin doing today to improve the challenging but doable task of raising confident, healthy, great kids. This book is an easy read (YES!) and an excellent tool for providing some very doable things to develop the kinds of characteristics in you, dads, that will positively impact your kids lives as well as yours.

This book is a godsend that fills in the gaps of what may be missing in our “toolbox” of parenting.

My kids are adults now and beginning families of their own. My husband did (and still does) a tremendous job as a father, but even so, I wish we’d had this book when our kids were young. Even after raising three great kids into great adults, this book is full of eye-opening information about what kids need that I wish I’d known. As someone who didn’t have the blessing of a great dad until I was an adult myself, I found myself nodding (tearfully) in agreement with everything Mr. Johnson said about what children need from their dad.

As grandparents, we are looking forward to putting some of these wonderful strategies into practice. I highly recommend this book to dads as well as to moms who want to partner with the father of their children to give them the best chance in life they can have.

The Author: Rick Johnson is a bestselling author of That's My SonThat's My Teenage SonThat's My Girl, and Better Dads, Stronger Sons, as well as Becoming Your Spouse's Better Half and Romancing Your Better Half. He is the founder of Better Dads and is a sought-after speaker at many large parenting and marriage conferences across the United States and Canada. Rick, his wife Suzanne, and their grown children live in Oregon. To find out more about Rick Johnson, visit www.betterdads.net

Bookstore Sighting & The Super Cool Scoop

Bookstore Sighting!
Today, I saw my latest book in a "real" bookstore for the first time (yay!). How fun is that? What's even more fun is that it was rubbing shoulders with some of my wonderful author friends: Leslie Gould, Rebecca DeMarino, and several others with whom I've connected or met.

GLOWING Feedback!
Like There's No Tomorrow (2014) and Like A Love Song (2015) have been extremely well received by readers. Reviews are trickling in and are all or nearly all 5 Stars. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, which is phenomenal and humbling!

Like There's No Tomorrow is a Finalist in OCW's Cascade Writing Contest (Published Contemporary). The winner will be announced on August 12.

Like a Love Song received a Romantic Times 4-1/2 star (the most they give) "Top Pick" review.

One reviewer writes about Like a Love Song:
"Very moving story about love, forgiveness, regret, and redemption. The characters are engaging and their situations compelling. From the first chapter I didn't want to put this one down. It was impossible not to root for the characters, cheering with them through their triumphs, mourning with them through their struggles. The romance was nothing less than sheer delight! A wonderful sampling of chemistry and passion, motivated by a growing and genuine love between Joe and Sue. The moments they shared a kiss produced that welcome warm and gooey feeling experienced in the best love stories. Yet without doubt, THE best love story in this tale is the one happening between the characters and God. The way Eide weaves a portrayal of the Lord's wooing of Sue and her wounded heart is - as the title implies - like a beautiful love song. Those who are Christian will be touched as they hear echoes of their own love story in this tale. Those who don't know Christ may find in these fictional events a stirring of their own heart by the truth that resonates so clearly about God's love. This is the third narrative I've read by Camille Eide (Savanna's Gift and Like There's No Tomorrow being the other two). This is her best offering yet! If you haven't read her work consider giving these stories a read. You won't be disappointed." ~M.L.

So readers are liking these stories! This is gratifying, especially when I've felt a distinct call from the Lord to write them.

But...

The problem, in spite of such glowing feedback, is that word of these stories is taking time to spread. My audience is small (and growing, but slowly). My brilliant publisher and I are newer kids to the block and are working hard to gain more visibility, but it's not easy. It takes time and teamwork.

I suspect it may actually take a village.

Would you like to be part of this village?

If you want to help me and my books to gain more visibility, you can like my Facebook Page, write a review on Amazon or Barnes & Noble, share a link to my website with friends, Facebook, Twitter, etc, share your copies of my books with family and friends (& ask them to post a review if they like it), or talk to your library or local bookstore about carrying the book. These are a few ways you can help get my books and my hard-working publisher on the map.

Lastly, The Latest Super Cool Scoop: My third book, The Memoir of Johnny Devine, a Novel,
(cover reveal coming soon!)
releases December 2015 from Ashberry Lane! I am especially excited about this "story-within-a-story" of a bad boy reformed and a good girl in need of reform. It’s a powerful tale of love, redemption, intrigue, and the miracle of deliberate grace.

Eliza, a WWII widow hired to write an exclusive memoir, lands on McCarthy’s hit list and must clear her name while trying not to fall in love with Johnny Devine, the born-again, ex-Hollywood heartthrob whose scandalous past keeps him too busy to notice her. Or does it?

The Memoir of Johnny Devine is a “classic” romance set in 1953 at a time when post-war America seeks security in prosperity, Hollywood’s Golden Age is coming to an end, the “Red Scare” reaches new heights of paranoia, and unrest over civil rights continues to grow. It’s geared toward women (and men) who enjoy a character-driven, inspirational drama, a strong but chaste love story, and a touch of intrigue.

I Just Signed a Contract for My Third Full-length Novel!

Ashberry Lane Publishing has just offered to publish my third full length novel, The Memoir of Johnny Devine! I am so excited and can't wait to share this story with you. We will have launch date soon, so stay tuned.

A little history about how this story came to be:
I was working on another novel--one that was giving me trouble--when I woke one morning from a vivid dream. (My dreams are usually pretty boring, so this got my attention.) In this dream, a very handsome man who walked with a cane watched in silence as a lovely young woman walked out his door. He didn't say a word, but somehow--because dreams are like this--I knew that his heart was breaking and yet he couldn't do or say anything to stop her.

I woke instantly fascinated! Why was his heart breaking? Why couldn't he stop her? I mulled it over, and soon, Johnny Devine's story--or stories, to be exact--was born.

So with a lot of prayer and the weekly encouragement of a wise and wonderfulauthor friend, I pushed out chapters week after week until the book was finished in just 3 months (It usually takes me a year to complete a novel). I believe that when the Lord lends his divine help to my writing (or anything we do), he is affirming that what we are doing worthy of his time and the use of his beautiful, divine creativity. I believe this story was his idea, his timing. And I believe he helped me write it. I just hope that I've told it well, and that readers will find it worth their while.
The Memoir of Johnny Devine, A Novel
by Camille Eide

Love can’t rewrite the pages of your past, but it can cover a multitude of sins—one page at a time.

1953: Desperation forces war widow, Eliza Saunderson, to take a job writing the memoir of ex-Hollywood heart-throb, Johnny Devine. Rumor has it Johnny can seduce anything in skirt quicker than he can hail a cab. But now the notorious womanizer claims he’s born again. And so he seems to be. Eliza soon finds herself falling for the humble, grace-filled man John has become—a man who shows no sign of returning her feelings. No sign, that is, until she discovers something John never meant for her to see.

When Eliza’s articles on minority oppression land her on McCarthy’s communist hit list, both John and Eliza become entangled in a HUAC investigation that threatens both John’s book and Eliza’s future. To clear her name, Eliza must solve a family mystery. She also needs to convince John that real love—not the Hollywood illusion—can cover a multitude of sins.

But just when the hope of love becomes reality, a troubling discovery confirms Eliza’s worst fears. Like the happy façade so many Americans cling to, had it all been empty lies? Is there a love she can truly believe in?

SNEAK PEEK: Like A Love Song (& Pre-Order!)

Counting down the days until Like a Love Song releases, but the pre-order link on Amazon is LIVE! Here's a little teaser from midway through this romantic relational drama to get your reader-juices going:

 * * * * * * * *

Joe was already at her side. “You okay, Sue?”

His nearness and the warmth coming from him set off a burst of panic in her. She swallowed hard and forced her voice steady. “I’m fine.”

“Did you want me?”

She inhaled to suppress the weird flutter in her chest. Want you? What have you been smokin’? Where’d you get an idea like that?

Oh yeah, Chaz. Fundraiser. “Yes, I almost forgot.” She explained the problem with Chaz and the dismantled sale items, and her need for things to be in working order as soon as possible.

Joe wore a pained look. “Wow. I’m really sorry for not paying closer attention to the boy. Yeah, I’ll fix it, right away.”

“And I don’t know how, but could you keep him busy? So he doesn’t find anything else to take apart? At least until we get through the fundraiser.”

Joe didn’t answer. Instead, the crease in his brow softened, and his eyes wore a strange expression. Like his wheels were turning. “Sure,” he said slowly. “There’s just one thing.” His eyes locked with hers. “A condition.”

Sue stiffened. That did not sound good. “Which is?”

Joe rubbed his chin. “I’ll keep Chaz busy if you agree to take a day off. Away from the ranch. You don’t have to plan anything. I’ll take care of it.”

Sue’s brows gathered. “You’ll take care of it? What is that supposed to mean?”

He didn’t answer.

Her voice rose. “You want me to do something with you?”

Joe nodded.

“Like a date?”

“No, no. Just ... a little outing. Just for fun. When was the last time you took a day off?”

“Last week. Three times. You were there for two of them, remember? I’ve left the ranch more times in the last two weeks than I have in the last two years.”

He shook his head. “Physical therapy doesn't count. It has to be fun.”

“Hey, I have fun.”

“You?” Joe belted out in a laugh. “Name the last fun thing you did.”

Her headache spiked. “Well, it’s not like I can just--”

“I know, when you’re not running yourself into the ground, you’re all fun, all the time.” His eyes narrowed. “Name one fun thing you've done in the last year.”

Sue huffed. “This is lame.”

Joe nodded. “A one-day outing with me along to make sure you have fun, or no deal.”

She let out another huff that could probably be heard all over the compound. “You’d hold a poor neurotic kid over my head for a date?”

“It’s not a date. Just ... a friendly little outing. And like I said, I’ll plan it. All you have to do is go along for the ride and relax.”

She let out an exasperated sigh. “This is not exactly the best time for me to be taking a day off. I've got the fundraiser to pull off, the kids, the temps ...” Not to mention hanging onto my sanity, keeping everything together, trying to figure out your twisted game ...

“After the fundraiser then.” Joe crossed his python arms and waited.

There had to be a whole warehouse of laws somewhere against being forced into spending time with a guy who looked like he could shred a semi with his bare hands. Hands she needed now or there wouldn't be much of a fundraiser. “Two hours tops. After the fundraiser. And Chaz is your shadow from now on.”

He crammed his hands in his pockets. “Half a day.”

A growl escaped her clenched teeth. “Fine.”

Joe smiled. “Deal.”

Sue headed for the main house. What in the world had she just agreed to?

Would YOU like a tender, heart-tugging love story sprinkled with a wee bit of humor about two quirky old Scottish sisters bent on reuniting, and their young pen-pals who fall in love even though her family secret could break his heart—again?

Like There's No Tomorrow is a tale of family, falling in love, faith, fiery furnaces, and the gift of each new day. If you like books by Deborah Raney, Karen Kingsbury, Debbie Macomber, Susan Meissner, Denise Hunter, Robin Jones Gunn, Sandra D. Bricker, Susan May Warren, or Rachel Hauck, you might like this book.

An influencer would receive a copy of the book, then read it and use one or more (or all) of the methods suggested at the end of this post for sharing the book with the people in your reach.

Are you interested in being an influencer for Like There's No Tomorrow? Please answer the following questions:
  1. Do you have a blog or website?
  2. Are you a reader who likes to review books?
  3. If you have never written a review, are you willing to read a dozen or more online reviews to get a feel for what makes a helpful book review?
If you can answer “Yes!” to one or more of these, leave a comment below (with a link to your blog/website if you have one) and how you would like to be contacted with details. (Please note: number of influencer copies and time-frame is limited, copies assigned at author's discretion.)

How to be an Influencer: 8 Ways To Help Your Favorite Author (from Rachelle Gardner’s Blog)
1. Amazon reviews. If you have positive things to say about a book, go ahead and say them! Don’t be false; don’t rave about a book you don’t really like. But write a good review if you can. Reviews are a powerful tool on Amazon that can make a big difference in an author’s sales. (Camille’s Amazon Page)

The Writing Process Blog Tour Continues...

Ever wonder what goes on in the mind of a writer? Fellow author and fabulous friend Carla Stewart “tagged” me last week in the Writing Process blog tour, so I’m up next to share about my “Writing Process.” Next week, the tour continues with authors Patty Smith Hall and Jennifer Anne Messing.

My Writing Process

1. What are you working on?
First off, SUPER BIG NEWS, more on that in a minute. I have completed three full length novels and am currently pondering what to do for a 4th. I might resume work on a story I began for NaNoWriMo a few years ago – one with a couple quirky characters who won’t leave me alone. I LOVE quirky folk, especially older ones. This story includes an earthy Gram who rescues spiders by hand and makes tea from things she finds growing in the forest, a kind-hearted cop, a sweet little boy, a young woman who keeps a terrible secret out of love and desperation, and an unfortunate accident that threatens to expose her. We'll see where that story leads...

2. How does your work differ from others of its genre?
I write "Faith-Inspiring Love Stories," but is not what you would call category romance. It fits more into a genre called "Romantic Women’s Fiction." Inspirational authors whose work most resembles mine in genre might be Deborah Raney, Susan Meissner, Jamie Langston Turner, and perhaps Charles Martin, although I blush to tack my name onto this bunch of literary greats. My work is neither purely romance nor straight women’s fiction but is usually a strong blend of both—equal parts love story AND heart-tugging relational drama woven around a journey of faith. I really enjoy stories with a solid thread of all three. Life is such a twisted blend of the things that move us, right? Novels ought to be just as twisted. J

3. Why do you write what you do?
See #2. J Actually, I am intrigued by what fears, loves, wounds, doubts, and longings drive people, and the courage, faith, and self-sacrifice it takes to overcome obstacles. I like to pose writer’s cue of "What If?" and then hold my breath along with the reader to find out. For example: What if you had a terrible secret you needed to take to your grave, but a brain injury causes your closest confidante to lose her ability to keep quiet? What happens when bad boy tries to reform a good girl? What if a widower’s broken heart is healed and he falls in love only to find she might not have long to live? What if the one thing you fear is the one thing you are forced to trust?

4. How does your writing process work?

By the sheer grace of God! It somehow gets done in spite of me. In my writing cave, there is much plotting and planning and coaxing the Muse, but there’s also far too much staring and re-tweaking the same lines. There are equal parts inspiration, revising, moping, asking for feedback, more revising, more moping, and then usually as a last resort: gut-wrenching prayer involving laying the whole mess at God’s feet and asking him to guide it, make it his story, make it harmonize with his song, bring it to life by his heartbeat.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF. . . .

RANDOM FACTS ABOUT ME:

I've published five novels and 2 novellas (more about those on my website.) I've been writing all my life, but decided in 2007 to get serious about being published.

I love action movies and Jane Austen. (she’s dead, I know. I found that out when I tried to get her to endorse my novel)

They let me play Bass guitar and sing in a worship band.

I can produce 4 dozen homemade cinnamon rolls in a flash for a crowd of drooling young adults. Or publishing house editors.

I used to have a Harley. Now we have seven grandkiddos. Decent trade, really.

I am a proud Grammy. Don't even think about taking candy from my babies.

I hate shopping (Yes, I'm aware that I'm a girl)

MY ROOTS:
I've lived in Oregon all my life, spent time in Eugene (Go DUCKS!), Springfield, Reedsport, and Smith River. Which is not really a town, but a river, about 70 miles long, a tributary of the Umpqua River in southwest Oregon.

Although it's not a town, it is a community with a strong sense of pioneer history. It's cool to say you've lived there, especially if you lived there during the days when you had to take a boat to school. No joke! The old farmhouse my grandfather and my mother grew up in still stands, nestled into a narrow, pasture carpeted valley, complete with a swimmin' hole and its own 'crick'. It may turn up in one of my novels.

There's a rumor that my ancestors had a connection with the Mafia back in Sicily. I used to fantasize as a kid about a big black limo with tinted windows pulling up and whisking me away from school. Ahhh. So THAT'S why I'm having so much trouble conjugating my dangling participles now.

NOT RANDOM: I am challenged by the truth and amazed by the grace of God. And it's either in spite of or because of that grace that I hold a PhD in Learning Stuff the Hard Way.
